High School Planning for Special Needs Students

Students with disabilities are more often than not steered toward vocational education, even though many students with disabilities would be very successful in the college prep/collegiate environment. It is our hope to help change that.

  • Provide confidential assistance for students
  • Ease family pressures during potentially stressful times of curriculum planning
  • Personalize the information and the process to accommodate individual students' needs
  • Provide structure to help student articulate goals and dreams
  • Career planning
  • Assist student with course selection during high school (appropriate HS prep curriculum)
  • Offer flexible appointment times, including evenings and weekends

  • Assess student strengths and potential career paths  (e.g., review test scores; recommend additional testing; discussion with student and family)
  • Research choices and establish a list of appropriate options
  • Research potential schools in depth (services, location, majors, living environment, transportation, extracurricular activities, access to instructors)
  • Plan strategy for visits
  • Advise student about test preparation and test choices
  • Recommend testing schedules and preparation plans; assist with needed accommodations
  • Schedule application completion time line (time and task management)
  • Provide worksheet comparing features of selected colleges
  • Attend IEP meetings and/or meetings with guidance counselor; other meetings as appropriate
